Why Is My House So Dusty? 3 Simple Fixes

There are many causes for a dusty home, but some of the simplest fixes involve the lungs of your home: your HVAC system. If you have ever wondered “Why is my house so dusty?” and are searching for a solution, today we are sharing 3 simple fixes.

What are prime causes of dust?:

Dust is caused by anything that can shed or flake off of something else into tiny particles. The primary culprits are dead skin cells, fabric fibers, and incoming debris and dirt that is trekked inside on shoes and pets. Another common culprit is particles from undistilled water running through your home’s humidifier.

What are simple ways to get rid of dust without having to clean all the time?

  1. Simple fix #1: Aside from cleaning and dusting regularly, the simplest way to keep dust under control is to check your air filter once per month and change it if it is dirty. The filter traps dust particles and prevents them from circulating throughout your house and ducts.
  2. Simple fix #2: As a general rule, requiring shoes to be removed as people enter your home will reduce dust from dirt and debris. This will support in preventing those dust particles from entering the home in the first place.
  3. Simple fix #3: Ensuring that you use distilled water in your home’s humidifier will prevent white particles from settling throughout your home and in your air filter, as these particles are not properly broken down when using non undistilled water.

Where are some surprising places where dust can hide and truly irritate people’s allergies?

One surprising place where dust can hide is on top of ceiling fans which spread these particles everytime you turn them on. Another example is on window treatments such as drapes, curtains, blinds, and shades. Other places include your air vents, bedding and linens, and under furniture.

Remember, your filter is what keeps dust, debris, and particles from circulating through your system and home, keeping your home cleaner and your system working more efficiently. When you don’t change your filter often enough, the airflow through your system is diminished, forcing your system to work harder to circulate air. Over time this can damage your system, shorten its lifespan, hinder efficiency, and cost you more on your monthly energy bills.
